The Seed Bank is low on seed, and the “network of seed savers” has been low on volunteers.
The Seed Gardens look good, and are producing seed, but an absence of the usual number of pollinators, like bees and butterflies, has also been evident.
Various varieties of food crops are being trialled in the Gardens, and also herbs and flowers that attract pollinators.
The Hot House, recently upgraded with shelving by Les Bravery, is now full of vegetable and herb seedlings, thanks to Chris Valentine.
Three volunteers have revived the Seed Savers Network, and we hope for several more gardeners to join us, in whatever manner and method best suits the participants, as we rebuild our store of local food seed. Come in and see us on Friday or Saturday mornings if you’d like to get involved.
Our Seed Savers team have been harvesting and growing locally adapted, non-hybrid seed for the community since 2010.
Our goal is to work with the community to save and distribute locally adapted, non-hybrid seed and plant material.
• To find, grow and distribute locally adapted seeds, particularly of vegetables and herbs as well as plants that are propagated by tubers, cuttings, rhizomes, bulbs, etc
• To adapt new varieties to local conditions
• To promote the practice of seed saving and the importance of conserving diversity in our food crops
